A retiree's pension decides how comfortably the North Coast works, and the rules for receiving it depend on where it comes from. Here's the real picture: what the US, Canada and the UK pay to a resident here, the one rule that freezes a pension, how pensions are treated for Dominican tax, and how the pension connects to residency.

Quick Answers

Can I receive US Social Security in the Dominican Republic?

Yes. The Social Security Administration pays benefits to US citizens living in the Dominican Republic, by direct deposit to a US account or through international direct deposit.

Benefits continue at the same rate, with annual cost-of-living increases.

Can I receive CPP and OAS here?

Canada Pension Plan benefits are payable abroad without restriction. Old Age Security is payable abroad indefinitely if you lived in Canada for at least 20 years after age 18; otherwise it stops after six months outside Canada.

The 20-year rule is the point Canadian retirees most need to confirm before relocating full-time.

What about the UK State Pension?

It is payable in the Dominican Republic, but it is frozen: it does not receive annual increases for residents here.

The UK uprates State Pensions abroad only in the EEA, Switzerland, Gibraltar and countries with a reciprocal agreement providing for it; the Dominican Republic is not among them.

Are pensions taxed in the Dominican Republic?

No. Pensions and social security benefits are exempt from Dominican income tax.

Residents under Law 171-07 are also exempt on the income they declared for their residency.

Is my pension taxed at home?

That depends on your home country. US Social Security may be taxable on the US return; UK and Canadian pensions follow their own non-resident rules.

A cross-border advisor confirms the home-country position.

How does the pension connect to residency?

The pensioner track under Law 171-07 requires a foreign pension of at least US$1,500 a month.

That residency carries a transfer-tax exemption on a first property purchase and duty-free import of household goods and a vehicle.

Where should the pension be paid?

Many retirees keep it paid to a home-country account and transfer to a Dominican account as needed; others use international direct deposit where their pension provider offers it.

A Dominican US-dollar account receives transfers cleanly.

How far does a pension go on the North Coast?

Further than at home for most North American and British retirees, particularly with property below the IPI threshold, which owes no annual property tax.

A $150,000 condo carries no annual property tax at all.

Do I need to report my move?

Yes. Each pension provider requires notice of a change of address and country, and periodic proof of life.

Keep the provider's forms and deadlines on a calendar.

Can I buy property on a pension alone?

Yes, with cash or equity from home; Dominican banks rarely lend to non-residents.

Many retirees fund the purchase from the sale of a home abroad and live on the pension here.

Dominican Tax on Pensions

Pensions and social security benefits are exempt from Dominican income tax. The Dominican system is territorial, taxing Dominican-source income; foreign financial income becomes taxable for residents only from the third year of residency, and pensions are expressly exempt from that as well. Residents on the Law 171-07 pensioner track are exempt on the income they declared for residency.

Pension and Residency

The pensioner track under Law 171-07 requires a foreign pension of at least US$1,500 a month, documented with statements. It carries a package of benefits: exemption from the 3% transfer tax on a first property purchase, a 50% reduction on certain other taxes, and duty-free import of household goods and one vehicle. Residency is not required to buy or own property; it is a separate decision for retirees relocating full-time.

Where a Pension Goes Furthest

A retiree's budget here benefits from two structural features. Property below roughly US$182,000 in appraised value owes no annual property tax. And healthcare, domestic help and everyday living cost materially less than in North America or the UK. Costambar, Residencial Hispaniola and El Batey are where many North Coast retirees settle, for walkability, community and proximity to care.

Questions worth asking before retiring here:

  • "Is my pension uprated in the Dominican Republic?"
  • "If I am Canadian, have I lived in Canada 20 years after age 18?"
  • "How is my pension taxed in my home country as a non-resident?"
  • "Does my pension meet the US$1,500 pensioner residency threshold?"
  • "Where will it be paid — home account, international deposit, or both?"
  • "What proof-of-life deadlines does my provider set?"
